What Are Doctor Fish

Doctor fish, or Garra Rufa, are unique bottom-feeding freshwater fish found living the Middle East. The mineral content and warmth of the water they live in creates a scarcity of food. It is believed that because of the limited availability of food, the Doctor Fish have developed their unusual behaviour of nibbling dead skin cells from people in the water.

The Legend of Doctor Fish

The story of how the Doctor Fish came to be so beneficial began in the early 1800s. Two brothers happened upon a hot spring in a field. They jumped in and were surprised to feel a host of small fish gathering around their feet. The fish began to nibble their toes gently and swarmed around the boys, tickling them.
From then on, the two brothers went to the hot spring every day. Amazingly, the one brother suffering from a skin disease recovered after some time spent with the Garra Rufa fish gently removing the affected dead skin cells.
The news spread like wildfire and people came from all over to enjoy the unique experience. Some people found their skin problems ceased after multiple visits with the fish. Hence the name, Doctor Fish.
